Psychosocial services

The Psychosocial-Oncology Program at KHCC works with inpatients and outpatients as well as family members and healthcare staff to reduce the psychosocial burden of cancer on its patients. The program is thriving, with active clinic and consult services. It has supported and initiated several key programs at the center and has been at the heart of coordinating outreach and support programs. In addition, the members are extremely active in research and looking for new ways to continually improve the service and the patient outcomes in the psychosocial arena.

The program has more than 30 professionals structured into 3 major divisions as follow:

1.       Mental health division divided into three parts-

o        Psychiatric unit

o        Psychology and psychotherapy unit

2.       Social work division

o        Clinical social work

o        Support and program –community based

3.       Pediatric psychosocial oncology services-

o        Clinical social works

o        Support and programs –community based

o        Psychiatry and psychotherapy

o        Developmental psychology

o        Play services, therapeutics and entertainment

The social workers at the center screen patients using a “distress thermometer” to determine what services are needed and where patients need to be referred. The team also works closely with physicians and nurses throughout the center to help them understand and better manage patients with depression and other psychological problems that may be related with their illness. We help provide treatment for patients with an inability to cope with their stresses and guide through the emotional downfalls of the treatment process
